PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst for hydrogenation excellent in removal of foreign substances by carrying out highly efficient hydrogenation of heavy hydrocarbon oil containing a large amount of the foreign substances and reforming the hydrocarbon oil to light oil and especially excellent in decrease in sediments and to provide a hydrogenation method. SOLUTION: This hydrogenation catalyst for heavy hydrocarbon oil comprises a porous silica-alumina carrier containing 3.5 wt.% of silica or more based on the catalyst, 7-20 wt.% of oxides of group VIA metals of the periodic table (hereinafter the same), 0.5-6 wt.% of oxides of group VIII metals, and 0.1-2 wt.% of oxides of group IA metals and having at least 150 m2/g specific surface area, at least 0.55 ml/g the total fine pore volume, 30-80% pore volume of fine pores with 100-200 Å diameter in the total fine pore volume, and at least 5% pore volume of fine pores with 1000 Å diameter in the total fine pore volume. The hydrogenation method is carried out using the catalyst. |
