PURPOSE: A power train for an automatic transmission is provided to minimize the power loss by realizing forward 5-speed and a backward 1-speed by energizing or de-energizing clutches and brakes and preventing rotation elements of three planetary gear sets from rotating at a higher speed than an output shaft under overdrive state, and employ a smaller number of frictional elements, thereby compacting and lightening the automatic transmission. CONSTITUTION: In a power train for an automatic transmission, a linear gear(9) and a ring gear(21) of a first single pinion planetary gear set(3) are directly connected to a planetary carrier(29) and a linear gear(23) of a double pinion planetary gear set(5) respectively, the planetary carrier of the double pinion planetary gear set is directly connected to a ring gear(31) of a second single pinion planetary gear set(7), a ring gear(15) of the double pinion planetary gear set is variably connected to a planetary carrier(19) of the second single pinion planetary gear set via a clutch(C3), and the ring gear of the first single pinion planetary gear set is connected to a transfer drive gear(39) to be an output element, wherein the linear gear and a planetary carrier(13) of the first single pinion planetary gear set are connected to an input shaft(1) via clutches(C1,C2) respectively, the planetary carrier and the ring gear of the double pinion planetary gear set are connected to a transmission housing(37) via brakes(B1,B2) respectively, and a linear gear(35) of the second single pinion planetary gear set is directly connected to the transmission housing.
