PURPOSE: An apparatus for processing gray scale variation of the alternation type plasma display panel and a method thereof are provided to increase the quality of a screen by varying a number of sustain pulses flexibly during gray scale control. CONSTITUTION: The device includes the first memory(15), the second memory(35), a counter(25), and a selector(45). The first memory stores input data related to RGB color signals which is digitized by an analog/digital converter(5) in a predetermined bit unit. The second memory already stores data for sustain discharge which is optimized for each bit. The counter counts the data of each bit which is stored in the first memory. The selector selects one from the data which is already stored in the second memory based on the signal from the counter and outputs the selected signal.
