PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize the behavior of a suction and exhaust valve at the time of a high speed rotation, while miniaturizing a system. SOLUTION: In this system, high speed cams 8 and the cam slide surfaces 20a of a high speed rocker arm 3 are arranged on nearly the same axis line as that of suction valves 5. Valve pressing pieces 14, facing between the arm 3 and the valve 5 to press the valve 5, is provided on a low speed rocker arm 2. The pieces 14 have structure wherein a gap, wider than the difference of the lift quantities of both the cams, is formed with the arm 3 between itself and the high speed locker arm 3. Hydraulic type switching mechanisms 6 are constituted of levers 25 rotatably supported by the arm 3, plungers 28 for rotating the levers 25, and lever returning springs 29. The each lever 25 has structure where another end is interposed into the gap by pressing one end by the plunger 28, and is made uninterposed from the gap by springy force of the spring 29 by releasing pressing by the plunger 28.
