PURPOSE: An air bag is provided to control the expansion of an air bag actively according to the speed at a collision, and to install a hybrid inflator having a gas chamber and an explosive inflator in a steering wheel. CONSTITUTION: An air bag system is composed of a collision detecting unit(10) detecting collision of a vehicle; a steering wheel having a cavity pipe to steer the vehicle; an inflator(80) in the steering wheel operating to protect a passenger at the collision of the vehicle; a gas chamber(70) storing gas in the cavity pipe; a valve(60) connected to the gas chamber to supply gas; and a microcomputer(50) electrically contacted to the collision detecting unit, the valve and the inflator. The microcomputer controls the operation of the valve and the inflator according to the comparison output by comparing the impact degree detected by the collision detecting unit with the predetermined critical value of collision, and expands the air bag.
