A device (8) for controlling electrically operated apparatus such as a television receiver controllable by infra-red signals comprises a missile having a shock-absorbing exterior in the form of an outer body or shell (10) of foam rubber or plastics, the shell housing a central casing (12) accommodating electrical circuitry powering infra-red LEDs (16) each disposed in a respective recess in a respective face of the block (10), the casing (12) housing electrical circuitry controlling the LEDs (16) and including an inertial switch or shock sensitive switch. The casing (12) also houses a battery for such circuitry. The circuitry within the casing (12) is arranged to operate the infra-red LEDs, to switch off the television receiver or the like, when the missile is thrown at the receiver.
