<PICT:0848320/IV(b)/1> The partial thermal decomposition of hydrocarbons such as methane to give acetylene is carried out in a three stage treatment in three successive chambers, the first consisting in mixing the hydrocarbon with only a portion of the total oxygen under pressure and heating the mixture to a degree at which the mixture is rapidly and promptly responsive to the second stage of treatment in which the gas is rapidly further mixed in the second chamber with the remaining oxygen under pressure and subjecting the mixture to a substantially higher temperature sufficient to cause rapid but controlled molecular breakdown of the hydrocarbon, the second chamber having a length to diameter ratio of not more than 4 to 1, and the incomplete thermal decomposition products are promptly withdrawn and are rapidly cooled in the third chamber. In a preferred embodiment, a hydrocarbon is sprayed by the twin fluid atomizer 5 into the chamber A and a mixture of tail gas with air or oxygen is also fed in through apertures 4, the pressure being maintained at 10 atmospheres, and the temperatures at 400 DEG -500 DEG C. The mixture entering the chamber B is subjected to fast mixing with the jets of tail gas and air or oxygen entering through apertures 4 and a temperature of 1,000 DEG -1,200 DEG C. is maintained and a slightly lower pressure than in chamber A. The gases then pass through the multiple orifices in the plate 7 and are spread into the chamber C which is maintained at a lower pressure than chamber B and at a temperature of 100 DEG -150 DEG C. A cooling medium which may be water under pressure is sprayed by the nozzles 8 into the chamber C. Specifications 772,094 and 848,319 are referred to.
