Method for minimizing the toxic effects of chemotherapy or cytotoxic irradiation on the hematopoietic cells of a patient having neoplastic cells or a malignant tumor are provided. Methods of the invention comprise the steps of treating the patient with a dosage of at least one hematopoietic cell stimulating factor, the dosage being sufficient in amount and time to cause a substantial increase in the population of the hematopoietic cells, and in differentiated blood cells, and then treating the patient with a dosage of chemotherapeutic agents or cytotoxic irradiation sufficient to substantially reduce the population of neoplastic or cancerous cells. The methods increase the absolute number of hematopoietic progenitor cells and differentiated cells in the patient's blood system prior to the administration of therapeutic insult thereby increasing the number of hematopoietic progenitor cells and differentiated cells which survive therapeutic insult. |
