PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To securely detect the foreign matters of dust and dirt, which are stuck to a film, and a scar made on the film by detecting the scar of the film or the foreign matter based on two reading results obtained by using reading light from two light sources different in diffusion states. SOLUTION: A scanner 12 reads a picture taken by a film F using a first light source 22 twice with pre-scanning (pre-reading) executed by low resolution and main scanning (main reading) for obtaining picture data of an output picture. The scanner 12 executes reading using a second light source 24, namely, second pre-scanning for detecting the scar of the film F and foreign matters such as dust and dirt, which are stuck to the film F, after pre-scanning is terminated. Thus, the scar and the foreign matters of the film can securely be detected and they can be corrected at need. Thus, the picture of high quality without picture deterioration owing to the scar and the foreign matters can stably be reproduced.
