Examples of compounds which can be used to promote mucus clearance in patients with congested airways are: uridine 5 triphosphate; adenosine 5 triphosphate; uridine 5'-O-(3-thiophosphate); 1,N6 ethenoadenosine 5 triphosphate; 5-bromo-uridine 5 triphosphate; cytidine 5 triphosphate; P1, P4-di(adenosine-5') tetraphosphate; 3,N4-ethenecytidine 5 triphosphate; P1, P4-di(uridine-5') tetraphosphate These compounds increase mucociliary clearance by increasing the ciliary beat frequency of cilia on the surface of lumina epithelia cells, increasing the secretions of mucins by globlet cells and by lowering the viscosity of the mucus through increased chloride ion secretion and simultaneous water secretion by the luminal epithelial cells. The compounds can be used in a medicament to prevent or treat pneumonia, including ventilator-associated pneumonia, or to prevent or treat sinusitis in nasally intubated patients. The medicament can be administered as a dry powder aerosol, nasal drops, eye drops or spray, an oral liquid or pill, a powder, a suppository, an aerosol, an injection, a topical application or an intra-operative installation, such as a gel, cream, powder, foam, crystals or liquid suspension.
