PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To significantly improve the operating efficiency for the retrieval of an image by recording the image retrieval conditions to be set in a retrieval condition name storage part with addition of the optional retrieval condition names to retrieve the image and designating the recorded retrieval condition names to set and adjust the image retrieval conditions. SOLUTION: A retrieval condition name storage part 3 stores the image retrieval conditions including the tone of color, color distribution, lightness, object range, etc., of an image to be retrieved together with the retrieval condition names added to the image retrieval conditions. A retrieval condition setting part (A) 101 acquires the image retrieval conditions from an operator and sets them. A retrieval condition name selection part 102 selects the retrieval condition names which are coincident with the tone of color, color distribution, lightness, object range, etc., of the image to be retrieved out of the stored retrieval condition names. A retrieval condition setting part (B) 103 extracts the image retrieval conditions corresponding to the selected retrieval condition names from the part 3 and sets them as the image retrieval conditions. Then a retrieval image selection part 104 selects the images similar to the image to be retrieved among a large quantity of image data.
