PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a steady fixing operation in a belt fixing unit. SOLUTION: A recording material S with a toner image formed thereon is passed through a pressure-contact part N between a heated endless belt 110 and a pressure roller 120 brought into pressure-contact therewith, so that the toner image is heated and melted and thereby fixed on the surface of the recording material. The oil application width O of an oiling roller 150 is smaller than a belt width B, also smaller than a maximum passage width P for a recording material suppliable for image formation, but larger than the formation width I of the maximum image formable on a recording material. This is particularly effective in the case of the formation of a full-color toner image on both sides of the recording material.
