PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To rapidly and surely decide the coordinates of the defective picture element position of a display device. SOLUTION: This display device 1 is set at a set plate 2, put into a lighting state, and moved to the position where the defective picture element is projected within the visual field of a microscopic barrel 4 by an X-Y stage 15. The picture element is irradiated with light by fiber illumination 6, 8, etc., and the optical change thereof is captured by a CCD camera 5, by which the defective picture element is decided. The position coordinates of the defective picture element are determined by the position data of the X-Y stage and are stored in a personal computer 10.
