Water for filtration (9) is delivered to the surface of a sand filter (10). It is confined to the upstream end (FE) of the surface by recycled water (14) fed to the other end of the surface (FR). This area increases as the filter surface becomes blocked. An independent claim is given for the equipment to carry out the process.
