The compound has the formula I AG-(CH2)n-CO2R1 wherein one of the hydrogens of (CH2)n can be replaced by R2; AG is N-aminoguanidine, N,N'-di-aminoguanidine or N,N',N"-tri-aminoguanidine; n is 1 to 5; R1 is H, phenyl, alkyl or alkyl-phenyl and R2 is phenyl, alkyl or alkyl-phenyl limited by the provisos listed in the specification. The compound is useful for treating or preventing non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus or obesity.
