PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and accurately evaluate the hair color depth by radiating the light to curved hair, determining the distribution of respective signal strengths of R and B in the lengthwise direction, and determining difference between a maximum value and a minimum value in the difference distribution of two signal strengths. SOLUTION: First of all, the prescribed number of hair is held and fixed by a hair holder 3 to be installed in a prescribed position in an evaluating device 1. Next, the prescribed light is made to irradiate the hair from a light source 4 to pick up an image of an area for obtaining the regular reflection light in the reflected light in the lengthwise direction of the hair to perform image processing on obtained image pickup data to determine the distribution of respective signal strengths of R and B. Next, the distribution of a value by subtracting signal strength of B from signal strength of R is determined to determine a difference between a maximum value and a minimum value in this distribution to evaluate that there is the depth in a hair color as this difference value becomes large to thereby obtain a result of excellently correlating with functional evaluation without cutting off the hair.
