The specification describes an improved method and compositions for the generation of transgenic non-human animals. The method permits the introduction of an infectious retrovirus into the genome of unfertilized eggs (e.g., pre-maturation oocytes and pre-fertilization oocytes). The infectious retrovirus is incorporated by microinjection into the perivitelline space of the egg. The infectious retrovirus is preferably a G glycoprotein from the family Rhabdoviridae.
