PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a picture reading part from being contaminated by the foreign matters of waste, dust, dirt and paper powder, which are carried by an original, and to maintain original reading ability which is stable with time by installing a recessed part receiving the foreign matters on the upstream side of an original transportation direction with respect to the picture reading part in a device main body. SOLUTION: When plural originals are placed on an original placing face 11 and picture reading is started with input from an operation part, transportation force is transmitted to the original in the lowest order with the rotation of a pickup roller 13 and it is transported to a feed roller 14. When the plural originals are transported to the feed roller 14, they are separated into one sheet in the nip of the feed roller 14 and a separation roller 16. The originals pass through an original transportation roller 2 and passes through a recessed part 17. At that time, waste, dust, dirt and paper powders, which are carried by the original, naturally drop to the recessed part 17 and they are accumulated. Thus, the dirt of the picture reading part can be prevented and stable original reading ability can be maintained.
