PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively measure the diameter of a material and detect the bend of the material for a facility for which very high accuracy is not required. SOLUTION: An instrument for measuring the diameter of a material 6 placed on a rotary transfer device 1 which transfers the material 5 by rotation is provided with a material passage detecting means 7 which detects the passage of the material 6 and a rotational angle detecting means which detects the rotational angle of the device 1. The instrument measures the diameter of the material 6 from the rotational angle of the device 1 when the end of the material 1 passes or from the relative moving amount of the device 1 when both ends of the material 6 pass.
