Coated articles are made by applying a thin adhesion-promoting layer of a polyalkylene imine to the activated surface or surfaces of olefin polymer substrates and then applying polyvinylidene chloride to the thus modified surfaces. Polyethylene imine and polyethylene are the preferred materials. The surfaces may be activated by treatment in a burning flame or by electrical discharge (electron bombardment). The polyalkylene imine may be deposited from solution in acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, or methanol and other alcohols, particularly those having less than 4 carbon atoms in the molecule. The vinylidene chloride may be applied as a polymer or copolymer with compounds such as vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid or an acrylic ester; in such copolymers the vinylidene chloride should be present in amount at least 25% by weight of the polymer. Articles such as containers may be coated on both inner and outer surfaces as desired. |
