PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a speed detecting device capable of clearly and accurately recording the traveling speed even in the case adopted for a tachograph. SOLUTION: In the speed detecting device, the results of computation on the traveling speed are recorded in a recording device in a tachograph constituted of a speed recording needle to move according to detected speed and chart paper. In this case, the speed detecting device is provided with a speed computing means to compute the traveling speed on the basis of an electric pulse signal generated on the basis of the movement of a rotator corresponding to the number of rotations of an axle, and is constituted so as to compute an average pulse period per one rotation of the rotator every time the number of pulses per one rotation of the rotator in the above-mentioned pulse signal is measured and to compute the traveling speed on the basis of the average pulse period.
