PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type picture display device constituted so that a high-quality projection picture can be obtained without using a 4P prism obtained by joining four rectangular prisms. SOLUTION: By picture panels 1-3, the light beams of R, G and B are modulated. A color synthetic dichroic prism 40 is constituted by joining two rectangular prisms 4 so as to synthesize the colors of the light beams of R and G. Then, the light beam of B is reflected on the prisms 4. A color synthetic dichroic prism 50 is constituted by joining two rectangular prisms 5 so as to synthesize the colors of the synthetic light beam from the prism 40 and the light beam of B.
