PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make accurately performable a tilt control through easy control without using any tilt sensor by using a stepping motor as the driving source for a tilt operation mechanism, and driving the stepping motor at the start of the recording and/or reproduction of an information signal and setting the tilt of a pickup chassis to a predetermined neutral position. SOLUTION: A tilt motor 56 swings the pickup chassis 45 to vary the tilt of the optical head 68 of an optical pickup device 48. The pickup chassis 45 is able to swing from a tilt-down stopper position to a tilt-up stopper position as shown by the arrow. Then a tilt neutral position is obtained by making use of the step out of the tilt motor 56 using the stepping motor. Namely, the tilt motor 56 is stepped out intentionally at the tilt-down or tilt-up stopper position to obtain a reference position and the tilt motor 56 is driven by specific pulses from the reference position to determine the tilt neutral position.
