A gem or mineral engraving process, comprising application of a patterned resin mask and blasting with corundum, is new. An engraving process comprises creating a black image on a transparent film, transferring the image onto a water-soluble photosensitive resin layer by UV exposure, washing with water to remove the non-exposed resin portion and leave a mask, blow drying the mask with hot air, applying the mask onto a gem or mineral substrate with an adhesive and blasting with corundum. Preferred Features: The corundum does not attack gems or minerals of greater than 9 Mohs hardness, e.g. ruby, sapphire or diamond. The corundum abrasive is blasted from a 4 or 6 mm diameter nozzle using pulsed air at 4-7 kg/cm<2> and at 260 or 300 l/min.
