Aqueous solutions of unsaturated quaternary ammonium salts of formula are made continuously by reacting N,N-dimethylaminoethylacrylate with methyl- or benzyl chloride in the presence of water in a tubular reactor. A process for preparing aqueous solutions of unsaturated quaternary ammonium salts of formula (I) consists of reacting N,N-dimethylaminoethylacrylate (ADAME) with a quaternizing agent of formula R-Cl (II) in the presence of water. The process is carried out continuously in a tubular reactor at 35-60 (40-50) deg C and a pressure of 10-20 (12-16) bars with the introduction of the quaternizing agent (II) at the foot of the reactor and of water and ADAME at the head of the reactor.
