PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve resolution independently of the resolution according to a digital video DV format or the like. SOLUTION: In the case of recording in the high definition mode, image data from a frame memory 3 are compressed by a compression section 4, the compressed image data are stored in a video track memory 5, and a high frequency compression section 7 compresses a high frequency component extracted by an HPF 17. Audio data compressed by an audio processing section 16 and the above high frequency component compressed image data are stored separately on different areas of an audio track memory 6 via a switch 18. The error of the data from each track memory is corrected, the compressed image data are recorded on an image track of a tape 2 and the high frequency component compressed image data and the compressed audio data are recorded on an audio track of the tape 2 separately and, in the case of reproduction, the reproduced data are expanded and the image data are summed and outputted.
