Feeding metal to a crucible (1) by levitation comprises: (a) a feed opening (6) arranged at the bottom of the crucible (1) and underneath an induction coil (4) surrounding the crucible (1); (b) a bar (10) of metal is introduced and lifted via the feed opening (6) into the crucible (1) inside the induction coil (4); and (c) the liquid metal (5) is moved from the edge of the feed opening (6) by a levitation effect.
