The invention concerns a device for differentiating between organic and inorganic elements comprising a high energy photon source, a device for displacing objects to be inspected and an acquisition system consisting of a line of detectors designed to interact with the photons which have traversed through the object to be inspected. It comprises a filtering system (2) designed to interpose a filter between a high energy photon source (1) and the object to be inspected, a computer-aided device controlling and synchronising (5) the filtering (2) and the acquisition (4) systems and a display system (6), the computer-aided system (5) elaborating, on the basis of the signals of two measurements performed with different filters the atomic number Z of the material traversed in the different zones of the object (7) and producing an image of the object by attributing a code to said zones according to their organic or inorganic nature.
