A headbox in a paper machine discharging a jet of stock into a wedge-shaped inlet gap (7) in a roll former and carried by support arms (23, 24) and bearing housings (27, 28) for creating a centre of pivot (Hc) for the headbox, which centre of pivot is fixed during operation and parallel to the axis of rotation (Fa) of the forming roll of the former, the headbox having central setting members (30-33), acting between said bearing housings and a machine stand (70) for movement of said centre of pivot in parallel and corresponding adjustment of the slice opening (18) of the headbox relative to the forming zone (8), as well as a rearward setting member (34) for acting between the rearward end part of the headbox and the machine stand. In accordance with the invention, the centre of pivot of the headbox is located adjacent to the plumb-line of the axis of gravity so that the rearward setting member is unloaded. The rearward setting member has an eccentric member (54) and a mechanical actuator (59) for acting upon the eccentric member for stepless pivoting of the headbox about the centre of pivot and corresponding pivoting of the slice opening relative to the forming roll. The invention also relates to a device for setting such a headbox.
