METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR OFF-LOADING DATA TRAFFIC IN A TELEPHONE NETWORK

A method and system for off-loading data traffic in a telephone network having an ingress switch switchably connectable to a source of data traffic and a source of voice traffic and having a tandem switch downstream of the ingress switch, so as to re-route the data traffic away from a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) thereby reducing congestion thereon. A digital cross connect based device connected between the ingress and tandem switches allows discrimination between the data traffic and the voice traffic downstream of the ingress switch prior to reaching the tandem switch, and diverts the data traffic to a data network.
