The press has a deep drawing punch (6) with holder (5) and a part (4) with abutment section (23) to hold a blank. There are controllable distance elements (12,12',12'') to adjust a distance between holder and abutment section. When the elements are active, the distance is approx. the same as or larger than, the thickness of the blank. The abutment part is formed by a drawing die. At least one of the distance elements is a plunger moved parallel to the holder by a pneumatic/ hydraulic piston cylinder unit, or an electromagnetic piston.
