An aluminum layer supported on a web of flexible polymeric material, especially a microwave transparent material, or a self-supporting aluminum web is continuously selectively metallized by applying to the web a pattern of aqueous sodium hydroxide resistant material, immersing and passing the patterned web through a bath of aqueous sodium hydroxide solution to completely remove the etchable metal from non-protected areas of the web, and washing and drying the demetallized web. When an aluminum layer is supported on the flexible web, it is preferred that there is an intervening adhesive layer and that a detackifying layer is applied to the adhesive layer exposed by the demetallization.
|
