The hosiery fashioning machine, especially for fine stockings, has a number of formers (5) in the required shape to hold the stockings, to be carried on a continuous conveyor path (4) in succession through at least one treatment station (3) and at least one loading and unloading station. The assembly has a system to inspect the stockings on the formers (5), which are in pairs on carriers to move on two parallel swing axes parallel to the longitudinal axes of the formers. Each of the two formers (5) on a carrier is coupled to a swing mechanism to be moved so that they are folded together on two parallel planes and opened out for inspection where they both lie on a common plane. The two formers (5) on each carrier rotate together on a common axis parallel to both swing axes, coupled to a mechanism to rotate them in a given angular range. The carriers are coupled or can be coupled to the conveyor system. The mechanisms for the swing and rotation movements are controlled at a given position on the conveyor path (4) so that, at one point (I), the two formers (5) are opened out to be carried onwards and be rotated round a given angle so that the front and rear sides are in the field of view of the operative (36). Cam drives give the swing and rotating movements to the carriers of the formers (5). The drive transmission from the cams is through straps and a control shaft, acting on bearing mountings (12,19) at the foot ends of the formers (5) on their carriers. Each carrier has a drive shaft, which is coupled to the cam drives and the former bearing mountings (12). The control and drive shafts are coaxial to each other, where one is a hollow shaft.
