In apparatus for conveying articles from two or more machines 4, 41 to a machine 2, the articles are conveyedby endless belts along channels 6, 61 to a transfer station at which the articles are raised by means of elevators 20, 201, one for each channel, to the level of a channel 1 provided with endless belts 38, 39 leading to the machine 2, a pusher 54 transferring the articles from the elevators to the channel 1, the channels 6, 61 being substantially at right angles to the channel 1. The articles are transferred from the outlet 5 of machine 4 by means of a lugged wheel 13 to an endless belt 8 which conveys them over a plate 19 on to an elevator 20, where they urge a pivoted arm 21 to the left, Fig. 2, against the action of a spring 25 thereby disengaging a dog 22 on the arm from a dog 29 on the elevator, which is then raised by a continuously reciprocating rod 33 connected to the elevator by means of a spring 31. As the elevator reaches the level of the channel 1, the article is supported by means of a pair of pivoted plates 46 having ledges 47 which are urged together by means of springs 50. A pusher 54 then transfers the article over a plate 53 to the channel 1 which comprises two pairs of opposed driven endless belts 38, 39. Sensitive elements 56, 561, 5611 arranged in the path of articles in channel 1 operates means for varying the speed of operation of the machine 2 in such a way that if no article is engaging element 56 the speed of machine 2 will be reduced, the elements 561, 5611 being arranged at such a distance apart that if the articles being conveyed along channel 1 are in contact with each other, both elements will be engaged and the machine 2 will operate at full speed if element 56 is engaged whereas if the articles are spaced and only one of the elements is engaged then the machine speed will be reduced.
