The flow directing device (20) comprises an inlet (18) supplying breathable gas, a first outlet (22) communicating with the inlet (18) and a mask (24) for supplying the gas to a patient, and a second outlet (26) communicating with the inlet (18) and an opening (36) to atmosphere. The flow resistance from the inlet (18) towards the first outlet (22) is relatively high. The flow resistance from the inlet (18) towards the second outlet (26) is relatively low. The device (20) is adapted such that, during the absence of inhalation, the pressure at the second outlet (26) is lower than the pressure at the inlet (18) and the first outlet (22) and gas flows to atmosphere (36). During inhalation at least some gas flows to the mask (24). The device (20) may be used in a system with a blower (14), a control unit (76) and one or two spool valves (72, 92). |
