The apparatus to impose a pneumatic compression on slivers, at the final paired outlet rollers of a drawing unit, has a suction roller (14) directly at the final paired rollers (2). The sliver (10) passes round it by at least 45 deg as far as the clamping line (12). A defined drafting plane (16) from the drawing unit (1) is generally a tangent plane for the sliver (10) to the suction roller (14). The suction roller (14) can be powered to give a different rotating surface speed from the speed of the final paired rollers (2) of the drawing unit (1). The suction roller (14) is the powered lower roller of the paired feed rollers (13). The suction roller can have a significantly larger diameter than the diameters of the rollers (6,7) of the final drawing roller pair (2). The suction roller has two clamping rollers which define the entry and exit sides of the compression zone.
