The tendency of regenerated cellulose to become discoloured when heated is reduced by first treating the material with a colourless aqueous salt solution containing a metallic cation of group IA of the Periodic Table having an atomic number of at least 11 or a cation of a metal of Group IIA of the Periodic Table having an atomic number of at least 20, the pH of the solution lying substantially between 6 and 8. The salt solution may be a sulphate, chloride or bromide of the metal. In examples "Cellophane" (Registered Trade Mark) and rayon yarn are treated with such solutions as sodium sulphate, chloride or acetate and barium chloride or nitrate and dried before being subjected to heat treatment, which may be treatment with steam at 240 DEG F. |
