A compost substrate is formed by subjecting a compost mixture of straw, poultry litter and water to a composting cycle, by leaving the mixture in a clamp in the open air for four to twenty hours. The compost mixture is then formed into an elongated first stack and left for twenty four to forty eight hours, for initial composting, and is then transferred from the stack into a controlled environment tunnel (1). The temperature of a top layer (21) of the compost-mixture (20) in the tunnel (1) is maintained in the range 70{C to 85{C for four to eight days, while the temperature of a bottom layer (22) is maintained in the range 40{C to 58{C. The compost mixture is transferred into the open air, thoroughly mixed and formed into a second elongated stack and left for twelve to thirty six hours.
|
