PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water electrolyzing method by which the overvoltage on the anode side is lowered. SOLUTION: A catalytic electrode 14 on the anode side and a catalytic electrode 16 on the cathode side are formed on both sides of a solid high molecular electrolyte membrane 12, and a collector 18 on the anode side and a collector 20 on the cathode side are formed outside the electrodes. A conductor plate 22 on the anode side and a conductor plate 24 on the cathode side are formed on both sides, a DC current is applied to the plates from a DC power source, and water is supplied to the collector 18 on the anode side and the collector 20 on the cathode side to conduct electrolysis. In this case, carbon dioxide is previously dissolved in the water to be supplied to the collector 18 to increase the ion concn. in the water and the oxygen source, hence the energy for the ionic decomposition of water is decreased, and the overvoltage on the anode side is lowered. |
