PURPOSE: A unit for controlling a head is provided to prevent an error in counting track number in the searching process of the head. CONSTITUTION: A searching pulse is supplied, and a control unit drives a head feeding unit for moving a head to a target location. When the movement of the head for one track is decided, a head control instrument changes a track-number count by one. When the output of a reference-location detecting instrument is changed, the control unit decides if the track-number count is corresponding to a reference location. When the track-number count is not corresponding to the reference location, the control unit corrects the track-number count in response to the reference location.
