PURPOSE: A method for operating the ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) port of a dual ATM is provided to improve the performance of the whole system by eliminating waste of time and unnecessary attempts generated during the process of LAN emulation performed through an ATM port in the event of the fault of a line. CONSTITUTION: In the initial driving of a dual ATM, a chip driver confirms the number of ATM ports and the abnormality of ATM ports to determine an initial mode(S10). If there is no error in the ATM ports, the chip driver determines the initial mode as a normal mode(S11,S12). If there is an error, the chip driver sets up as a test mode or a detect mode(S11,S16,S17,S21). The chip driver, in the detect mode, confirms the abnormality of ATM ports while changing the ATM ports every regular time(S22). If there is no abnormality, the driver chip changes the mode into the normal mode(S24) and requests the restart of an ATM associated work accordingly.
