PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a gas barrier coating suitable for oxygen gas barrier laminates having an excellent oxygen barrier property under high humidities and used for food-wrapping films, etc., by using a specific polyvinyl alcohol- based polymer. SOLUTION: This coating comprises a polyvinyl alcohol-based polymer containing 2-19 mol.% of <=4Cα-olefin units and having a viscosity-average polymerization degree of 100-1,000, preferably 200-600, more preferably 250-550, and a weight-average polymerization degree (Pw)/number-average polymerization degree (Pn) ratio of >=2.4, preferably >=2.5, more preferably >=2.7. The polymer has a saponification degree of 90-99.99%, preferably 97-99.95%, more preferably 98.5-99.90%. The polymer preferably contains 0.01-2 wt.% of sodium acetate, and further preferably contains <=5% of silyl groups.
