PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance operability by making a decision whether an ink container is required to be replaced based on the signals from a cover open/close detecting means and a residual quantity detecting means and performing a processing related to a specified ink replace mode, as required, thereby replacing a recording head or a tank quickly. SOLUTION: A cover open/close detecting sensor 10 and a residual quantity detector 11 deliver the open/close state of a cover and the residual quantity of ink in an ink tank, respectively, to a controller 20. Upon receiving an open signal from the sensor 10, the controller 20 determines current residual quantity of ink based on a signal from the detector 11. If a decision is made that ink is required to be replaced, a transition is made immediately to an ink replacing mode and it is notified by lighting an alarm lamp, for example. At the same time, a carriage drive section 13 is driven to shift a recording head unit to a position where it is replaced easily. According to the arrangement, the recording head unit can be replaced quickly without requiring any special operation for making a transition to the ink replacing mode. |
