PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently print bar codes on mails by installing a means for judging what kind of sorting works should be carried out afterwards for mails accumulated in sorting boxes and determining necessity and types of bar code printings on mails based on the results of judgment. SOLUTION: When a bunch of mails are set in a throwing inlet 2, the existence of mails in the throwing inlet 2 is detected and mails are transported to a transportation path 4 one by one, During the transportation, the zip code, address, bar code, and the likes of each mail are read by an address letter distinction part 3 and the receiver's address is judged. A control apparatus 8 searches a sorting box determining table based on the obtained address and determines the sorting boxes in which mails are accumulated. Further referring to the bar code printing determining table, the control apparatus 8 determines the necessity and types of printing of bar codes on mails and, in the case of printing of bar codes, the apparatus 8 encodes the addresses and bar codes are printed on mails by a printing apparatus 5, and after that, the mails are accumulated in determined sorting boxes.
