PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a copolyester resin having excellent abrasion resistance, capable of being mixed with all fillers, soluble in general organic solvents, and useful for forming coating films by polycondensing a specific diol component with a specified dicarboxylic acid component. SOLUTION: This copolyester resin for forming coating films preferably has an inherent viscosity of >=0.5 (in a mixed solvent comprising phenol and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane in a volume ratio of 1/1 in a concentration of 1 g/dl at 25 deg.C), and is prepared from (A) a glycol component comprising (i) 5-95 mol.%, preferably 10-50 mol.%, of one or more aromatic glycol components selected from compounds of formulas I to III [(n) is 1-4; R1-R4 are each H, a halogen, a 1-6C aliphatic hydrocarbon or an alicyclic hydrocarbon; R5, R6 are each a 1-12C aliphatic alkylene] [for example, 1,4-bis(hydroxymethyl)benzene] and (ii) another glycol component (for example, neopentyl glycol), and (B) a dicarboxylic acid (for example, terephthalic acid).
