PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bearing mechanism in which a plurality of bearing pads are arranged around a rotary shaft at a certain spacing, capable of damping shaft vibrations in good performance by securing a fluid film even if lubrication is made with a low viscosity fluid such as water. SOLUTION: Bearings 1 and 2 have several flexible pads 3 and pressure walls 4. Each pad 3 is fitted with a piezoelectric element 5, and when a voltage is impressed, the piezoelectric element 5 elongates and deforms the pads 3. With deformation of pads, the gap distribution formed by the pads in the area to a rotary shaft 100 varies. The vibration of the rotary shaft 100 is sensed by a sensor 6, and a control device gives the element 5 such an impression voltage for deformation of pads that a gap distribution suitable for damping the vibration is generated.
