DESULFURIZING AGENT AND METHOD FOR REGENERATING SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a desulfurizing agent based on zinc oxide and capable of regeneration by heating at a relatively low temperature. SOLUTION: The desulfurizing agent contains 100 parts by mol of zinc oxide and 5-250 parts by mol of zirconium oxide. A mixed aqueous solution containing a water-soluble salt of zinc and a water-soluble salt of zirconium is prepared and mixed with a precipitating agent comprising a basic material to form a precipitate consisting of zinc oxide and zirconium oxide and the precipitate is dried and fired at a temperature in the range of 500-1,200 deg.C in an oxidizing atmosphere to obtain the desulfurizing agent. This desulfurizing agent is regenerated by heating to a temperature in the range of 450-700 deg.C in an inert gas containing 1-30 vol.% oxygen and 1-20 vol.% steam.
