PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for automatic transmission for vehicle capable of shortening shift time at the time of multistage down shift and obtaining the durability of a friction engaging device. SOLUTION: If it is judged by a multistage down shift judging means 144 that multistage down shift judgement is done when it is not judged that a running condition is a power off running condition by a power off running condition judging means 146, an automatic transmission 14 is obliged to perform down shift sequentially from its first gear step to a second gear step through an intermediate gear step between the first gear step and the second gear step by a multistage down shift control means 148. Moreover, if multistage down shift judgement is done when it is judged that a running condition is a power off running condition by the power off running condition judging means 146, the automatic transmission 14 is obliged to perform down shift directly from the first gear step to the second gear step by the multistage down shift control means 148 because large engine torque and inertia torque at the time of down shift are not generated even if down gear shift is done all at once.
