PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display(LCD) having a wide transparent electrode and a stripe electrode is provided to accomplish a higher display quality without occurrence of disclination while forming an oblique electric field between the transparent electrode and the stripe electrode so as to arrange liquid crystalline molecule along the oblique electric field. CONSTITUTION: An LCD comprises a pair of substrates(12, 14), a liquid crystal layer(16)disposed between the substrates(12, 14), a plurality of stripe electrodes(22) formed on one of the substrates(12, 14), the stripe electrodes(22) being arranged for each pixel unit, and a transparent electrode(18) formed on the other of the substrates(12, 14) in such a manner as to cover most portion of the entire surface of the substrate.
