PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the overall size of internal combustion engines by extending their intake, supercharging or exhaust passage inside a chain for transmitting the rotation of the crankshaft to the camshaft. SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine 1 has an intake passage, supercharging passage 14 and exhaust passage 13 all connecting to a combustion chamber 15, a camshaft 17 rotatably supported on a cylinder head 4 to drive an intake valve, exhaust valve and supercharging valve, a chain 25 for transmitting the rotation of a crankshaft 8 to the camshaft 17, and a supercharger 40 driven by the camshaft 17. The intake passage, supercharging passage 14 or exhaust passage 13 extends inside the chain 25.
